The photo series Serbia Unfiltered catches a glance of the absurdity of modern life in the Balkans. Serbia is a nation which is very proud of its heritage and tradition and today’s capitalism is taking its own turn on Serbia too. The roots are being re-examined and transformed to other shapes of world culture. Belgrade is developing rapidly, but the other parts of Serbia are not. People in small places still have an urge to belong to some kind of community, even when it’s not part of their own heritage. Author examines these two thesis, moving from the capital to rural places, trying to find out about his own existence.
This photographic experience was never meant to become a photo series, as it was just a little wandering inbetween of other projects. While going through the photo archives I caught myself asking the question what is the thing that attracts me to the uncommon, to absurdity, to scenes which are very outplaced from the known, as I never approached the photographed situations in that sense. Being it the middle aged cowboys, singing gospels in orthodox communities, or gold diggers in the 21st century, it sounds as if it’s made for fiction. And I don’t think there is better fiction than the one in front of us, as people inspire people, and imagination wouldn’t grow without us being inspired. I mean it probably would, but then the dinosaurs would be cowboys.
