Midsummer is a celebration of the season of summer, taking place on or near the date of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Midsummer is celebrated in many countries, but is synonymous with Scandinavia, where it is observed as a national holiday in Finland and Sweden. Sweden’s midsummer festivities began in the late Middle Ages when people celebrated by dancing around a flower and greenery-decorated pole, known as a maypole. Many of these rituals arose from the belief that Midsummer was a magical time of good fortune and healing.
In 2019, after my mother passed away, my dear friend Lars asked me to be his guest for the Midsummer holiday at Brännö, Sweden. For what seems to be a religious celebration, it hasn’t much to do with it, or maybe I just didn’t feel it that way. It has much more to do with dancing, helping, hugging, caring… I knew that the Ekberg family was big, but I didn’t know at the time that it was the biggest one I’ve ever met. Regardless of the numbers, everybody was passionately caring about everyone, and everybody respected everyone. There was a huge amount of love and compassion. And I was treated the same way, as if I was one of the family members.
